A Declaration of Interdependence for Salmon Nation
This is a public working space to develop a Declaration of Salmon Nation. We welcome your thoughtful contributions! The following have been made from active Citizens so far:
Whereas: The spirit and blood of First Nation Peoples and Salmon have fertilized the rainforests of home and spawned the Salmon Nation and whereas First Nations have been joined recently in this eternal responsibility by non-first nations citizens
Therefore: all who now call these Rainforests of Salmon Nation home,share in the responsibility for its protection given to us by the creator
Whereas: The rains fall in Salmon Nation, the forests grow in Salmon Nation, the hills and mountains of Salmon Nation constrict flowing rivers into cascading streams, and the Salmon return throughout Salmon Nation, notwithstanding the efforts of the human citizens of Salmon Nation.
Therefore: Let the rains fall, let the forests grow, let the streams flow, let the salmon swim, so that all the citizens of Salmon Nation may be fed.
Whereas: The peoples of this earth feel threatened to speak out for what is clear in their hearts but has being dismantled by the fear mongers:
Therefore: By being brave, by speaking from your heart and from the truth gifted you by our Planet, by understanding that fear only stifle's brave hearts and sound minds, you will know true power, you will know that you are not alone, you will know that as you speak, more people will be taking care to listen, you will know that the you will be a direct link to a better future for our children and all god's (Buddah's, Great Spirit, All the planet's spiritual guides) creatures. You will know that you are not helpless, you will know that you are the best defense for the safety of the Planet . You will know what it feels like to have grace and a peaceful and loving heart, and you will know great love.
Whereas: in the spirit of trust, these are the words that come from the flow,
that we must take on the role of planet saver, not because of a specialness, but as a result of it.
Ho, it is plain to see, that the paradise planet is ours for free, as long as we don't steal it.
And that life is a privilege, that conscious life is a responsibility, that aware life is a joy
I lift you up, brother, so you may present me, so the trees, flowers, fish and bugs may fly, swim, root and smell, for you, sister, in these words of love, that we are we and we are we.
Therefore: there is no need for executives in the world of the spruce and the dove.
Whereas: No one really planned on the human population of Salmon Nation more than tripling over the past 100 years, and no planned on losing the timber, soil, rivers and fish to overpopulation, overdevelopment, overuse of the resources and selfishness. And because the human presence in Salmon Nation has heretofore been that of an invasive species.
Therefore: Education, not by blame or humiliation, but by the common bond of our mutual stake in the life and health of Salmon Nation; is the most important thing we can participate in for securing the future survival of Salmon Nation and it's indigenous species.
Whereas: The earth and its atmospheric envelope is a finite space, encompassing and home to a complex interdependent dynamic balance of the living and the non-living, and
Whereas
Humankind is but one of the living species in this interdependent web
Therefore: It is an inseparable part of our daily life to strive to discover and enact our part in the dynamic balance, neither dominant nor subservient, but cooperative and enabling of all in the balance
Whereas: The water falls and nourishes the land and our spirits.
Therefore: We must embody the water and its spirit.
Whereas: Pink salmon spawn before they start their journey.
Therefore: There are Chinook salmon in the GREAT LAKES at the KALAMAZOO RIVER.
Your story matters...
Salmon Nation would not be the same without millions of people who call it home, and it can’t survive without your help and active participation. But active participation doesn’t just mean making an annual donation to a cause you believe in, although that sure helps. Participating means realizing that your experience makes the difference and that you have something to offer this growing movement.
Maybe you’re a student or an educator, artist or small business owner. Maybe you’re a day-laborer, rancher, electric utility worker, government employee, engineer, chef, retailer, state governor or congressperson. Regardless of what you do, know that we all matter and that we all have a stake in the economic and ecological vitality of this bioregion. Salmon Nation is about recognizing these interconnections and acting on your passion in a way that enhances whole watersheds and fosters our shared prosperity.
There are a million ways to participate in this growing movement, and in these pages we provide a few starting points. You could declare your citizenship and find out about upcoming events, or you could add yourself to the map. You could share photos of trips you’ve taken or things you’ve seen in the bioregion. You could sport some Salmon Nation gear, make a contribution, or get the Salmon Nation credit card. You could even learn how to use the logo on your products or help us spread the word in other ways.
Whatever you do, you’re invited to live like you mean it here in Salmon Nation.
